What is Laminated Glass?

Laminated glass is a modern solution that can improve your home's security and warmth.

As a homeowner, your windows and doors are more than just functional elements of your property, they are vital for security, warmth, and style. Laminated glass is a modern solution that can elevate all three. But what exactly is it?

Laminated glass is a special type of glass designed to enhance both safety and security and offers strength, durability, and enhanced performance. Unlike standard glass, which can shatter into dangerous fragments, laminated glass consists of two or more layers of glass bonded together with a strong, transparent interlayer, usually made from polyvinyl butyral (PVB).

This clever construction ensures that even if the glass is broken, it stays intact, making it a safer, more secure choice for your home.

How does laminated glass differ from toughened safety glass (tempered glass)?

Toughened glass is normal glass that has been treated through a heating and rapid cooling process (tempering) to increase its strength. This process makes the glass significantly stronger than ordinary glass, often about 4-5 times stronger than untreated glass, however while toughened glass is more resistant to impact, when it does break, it shatters into small, harmless pieces.

Although great for safety, it is sometimes worth considering laminated glass over toughened safety glass for some applications, such as when glazing doors which may be vulnerable to break-in attempts.

While laminated glass is more expensive and both laminated and toughened glass both offer safety benefits against impacts and breakage, laminated glass is harder to penetrate as it stays intact when broken. The PVB interlayer makes it very hard to get through, whereas toughened safety glass crumbles into tiny fragments if it is broken. It also helps to reduce noise and in fact, acoustic glass used in double glazing works by exactly the same principle and other laminated glasses (by using a special acoustic PVB interlayer).

Whether you're considering replacing your windows or upgrading your doors, laminated glass offers a practical and elegant way to safeguard your property while improving energy efficiency, reducing noise, and enhancing your home's overall appearance.

Key Benefits of Laminated Glass

Enhanced Security

Laminated glass is much harder to break than regular glass. Even when impacted, the interlayer holds the glass together, creating an effective barrier against intruders.

Improved Safety

Unlike standard glass, laminated glass doesn’t shatter into sharp pieces (as would be the case with standard (non-toughend) glass. Instead, the fragments stick to the interlayer, reducing the risk of injury and making it ideal for homes with children or elderly residents.

Noise Reduction

If your home is near a busy street, airport, or school, laminated glass can make a world of difference. The interlayer acts as a sound barrier, significantly reducing unwanted noise and creating a quieter, more peaceful living environment.

UV Protection

Protect your home’s interior from the sun’s harmful rays. Laminated glass with a PVB interlayer blocks up to 99% of UV light, helping to prevent your furniture, flooring, and curtains from fading over time.

Energy Efficiency

Keep your home comfortable all year round. Laminated glass improves insulation, helping to maintain consistent indoor temperatures and reduce energy bills.

Weather Resistance

Living in an area with unpredictable weather? Laminated glass is designed to withstand strong winds, hail, and flying debris, keeping your home secure and your family safe.

Safety Features of Laminated Glass

  • Breakage Control: The glass holds together even when broken, preventing sharp fragments from scattering.

  • Child-Friendly: Laminated glass reduces risks, making it a safer option for homes with children or pets.

  • Compliance with Safety Standards: Laminated glass meets and often exceeds the safety requirements for residential windows and doors, giving you peace of mind.

Where Should You Use Laminated Glass?

Laminated glass is versatile and can be used throughout your home, including:

  • Front and Back Doors: Combine security and style for the perfect entryway.

  • Street-Facing Windows: Reduce noise and increase safety.

  • Conservatories and Skylights: Protect your space from UV rays and improve energy efficiency.
