FAQs
Do French doors open outwards or inwards?
French doors can be made to open either inwards or outwards. This of course may be determined by where there is enough room for the doors to swing open fully without hitting any obstacles. When opening to an outdoor space like a patio area, French doors will often open outwards. In an apartment, with a Juliette balcony, and safety railing, French doors may then be required to open inwards, for example.
Do you need permission for French doors?
In most cases, you won’t need planning permission to install French doors if you're replacing similar doors or making small changes. These usually fall under "permitted development" rights. However, if you live in a listed building or a conservation area, you might need to get special permission. It's always best to check with your local planning authority to be sure.
